Donor contributions make it possible for WHO to provide technical assistance, medical supplies and coordination services during humanitarian emergencies. As the lead agency of the Health Cluster, WHO works with UN agencies, NGOs and other partners to address the needs of people in crisis in a comprehensive and coordinated manner. To continue our work and to increase our capacity, funding to both WHO's 'Five Year Plan to Strengthen WHO's Capacity for Humanitarian Health Action' and for the 'Consolidated Appeal' is vital.

Update on the crisis in the Syrian Arab Republic
The World Health Organization requires US$ 39.8 million until June 2013 to respond to the acute health needs of populations affected by the crisis in the Syrian Arab Republic, estimated at almost four million persons, including internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returnees.

Health Cluster partners require US$ 29 million to address the health needs of the population affected by the crisis in Mali in 2013, of which US$ 12 million are urgently needed for priority activities in the next six months

Health response to the crisis in the Syrian Arab Republic and neighbouring countries
As the humanitarian situation continues to worsen, WHO has designated the crisis in the Syrian Arab Republic and neighbouring countries a Grade 3 emergency based on the criteria in its Emergency Response Framework. The latest assessments estimate that over four million people have been affected in all 14 governorates of the country. In addition, over 500 000 refugees have fled to five of the neighbouring countries.
