Donor contributions are key to sustaining and strengthening our work in crises. It is also essential that the reporting on funds received for WHO's work in crises be transparent.

Zimbabwe

WHO is working with the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare and health partners to establish a cholera command and control centre to enhance case detection and management, mapping of trends and interventions and coordination.

Humanitarian Appeal 2009

On 19 November 2008, the United Nations Under-secretary General launched the Consolidated Appeals Process 2009. WHO is fully involved in this process and is presenting, together with all partners, a series of health-related projects in selected countries to support the international community’s answer to ongoing complex emergencies.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo

21 November 2008-- WHO supplies, including 15 000 litres of IV fluids, arrived in Goma today that can treat up to 3000 severe cholera cases. A region-wide distribution plan to supply medicines from Goma to multiple locations has been finalized. Cholera cases continue being reported in Goma, but intensive control has stabilized the situation. But the same cannot be said for areas where insecurity is preventing humanitarian access.

Ethiopia Response and Preparedness

2 October 2008 -- Hunger, preventable disease and poor health care are the main humanitarian risks today facing millions in Ethiopia affected or displaced by drought, flooding and insecurity.

The World Health Organization is determined to expand its support to the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health and other partners to provide enhanced emergency health responses and ensure the health sector can better prepared for future crises.

Food crisis intensifies Ethiopian suffering

11 July 2008 -- Some 4.6 million people need urgent health relief in Ethiopia where food insecurity, crop failure and weak health services compound the country's humanitarian crisis. The government has issued its "Revised Humanitarian Requirements for 2008" to overcome food, water and medical supply gaps. WHO is supporting emergency humanitarian action with health assessments and surveillance, plus coordinating Health Cluster partners.

WHO Strengthens humanitarian actions

11 June 2008 -- In the WHO Humanitarian Forum 2008 today WHO annouced that it has intensified its relief work across the globe, launching 40% more emergency response operations and coordinating the work of multiple health players involved in crises.

WHO Health Action in Crises thanks donors for their immediate support and calls for continued assistance for Myanmar

May 2008 -- Several donors immediately responded to the call for support aiming at providing emergency health relief to the thousands of people affected by Cyclone Nargis early May 2008. WHO Health Action in Crises would like to sincerely thank the donors that contributed almost US$ 7 million in cash and in kind to support life-saving operations and to help save lives and reduce suffering.
