Leprosy

Situation and trends

At the beginning of 2012, a total of 107 countries or territories reported on leprosy to WHO: 29 from the African Region, 28 from the Region of the Americas, 11 from the South-East Asia Region, 22 from the Eastern Mediterranean Region and 16 from the Western Pacific Region. Most countries in the European Region have not reported cases in recent years, although several detect a few cases annually. At the beginning of 2012, 224 365 new cases of leprosy were detected, and the registered prevalence was 181 941 cases.
