Global Health Observatory (GHO) data

Number of meningitis epidemics

2014 epidemiological season

Districts having crossed the meningitis epidemic threshold, defined as weekly attack rate of 10 reported cases per 100 000 population

The epidemic activity in 2014 was relatively low ; in total, the epidemic threshold was crossed in 12 districts.

The countries reporting epidemic districts were Benin, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana and Nigeria, while in Guinea an epidemic occurred at sub-district level.

The epidemic threshold is an operational threshold established in order to differentiate the seasonal case recrudescence from epidemics. Once the weekly attack rate reaches this pre-defined threshold within a given district, and meningococcal meningitis is confirmed, a reactive vaccination campaign should be implemented.
