Antonio Cao was born in Cagliari, Italy on 4 June 1929. In 1954, he got a first-class honours degree in Medicine and Surgery. In 1962 became First Assistant Professor at the Paediatrics Clinic of the University of Cagliari” and later on in 1968 First Assistant Professor at the Paediatrics Clinic of the University of Perugia. In 1974 Antonio Cao became Full Professor of Paediatrics and Chair of the Paediatric Department of the University of Cagliari and in 1992 he was nominated Director of the National Council of Research Institute for Research on the Thalassaemias and Mediterranean Anaemias (IRTAM)- Cagliari. At present time Antonio Cao is Prof. Emeritus of Cagliari University, President of Scientific Committee of the Italian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and member of the Scientific Committee of FASE-1 Society for developing new drugs of Sardinian Region. Prof. Antonio Cao is still involved in research project on inherited haemoglobinopathies and on genomic wide association studies for complex disorders.

  • 1994 - Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, US
  • 1995 - First Internazionale Award “Maria Vilma e Bianca Querci”, Genova, Italy
  • 2000 - Marta Philipson Award
  • 2008 - Sardus Pater, Award
  • 2010 - Italian Society of Paediatrics Award “Antonio Cao Master of Paediatrics”
