Resources for gender mainstreaming

The WHO Gender Policy

The WHO Gender Policy calls on the organization to "integrate gender considerations in all facets of its work," stating explicitly that "gender mainstreaming . . . must become standard practice in all policies and programmes." Facilitating gender mainstreaming within the World Health Organization is one of the most important responsibilities of the Gender and Women’s Health Department.

Millennium Development Goal "storyline" additions

The United Nations Millennium Declaration, ratified in 2000, lays out a path toward development and freedom from want for all the peoples of the world. To allow for monitoring of progress along this path, representatives of UN agencies and other international organizations have promulgated a set of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs have rapidly become a focus of international development efforts, as countries and organizations strive to rise to the standards that the Goals set.

The MDGs acknowledge gender equity as an important prerequisite for development – indeed, MDG number 3 is expressly about gender. Since gender is an aspect of our lives that follows us into practically everything we do, however, it is logical that it will be relevant to each of the other MDGs, as well. With this in mind, GWH has developed a set of recommended additions to the MDG “storylines” – accompanying texts meant to contextualize and help interpret the Goals themselves. These additions highlight the gender dimensions of each health-related MDG, in the belief that awareness of these dimensions will make reaching the Goals more possible.
