FAO/WHO Second Global Forum of Food Safety Regulators - follow-up information

The Chairmen’s summary (available in Arabic, Chinese, English, Spanish, French and Russian) of the FAO/WHO Second Global Forum of Food Safety Regulators (Bangkok, Thailand 12-14 October 2004) is now available from the GF2 website. The Joint FAO/WHO Secretariat will conduct an e-forum to solicit the views of Member countries on a possible Third Global Forum. Details of the e-forum will be announced in due course. WHO International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN)

Inaugurated at the Global Forum 2, INFOSAN and its component INFOSAN EMERGENCY received full support from the participants of the Forum. To date 121 countries have designated INFOSAN Focal Points and INFOSAN EMERGENCY Contact Points.

FAO/WHO Regional Conference on Food Safety for the Near East

FAO and WHO will hold a two-day joint Regional Meeting on Food Safety for the Near East in Amman, Jordan, from 5 to 6 March 2005. The conference will be attended by food safety policy-makers and specialists from the Near East Region. The conference will facilitate discussion on practical actions and capacity building opportunities to promote food safety in the countries of the region. Joint FAO/WHO Nutrient Risk Assessment Project

Call for Experts: 24 November 2004 - 7 January 2005
An expert technical workshop will be convened by FAO and WHO in May 2005 (tentative). Its purpose will be to establish an international approach to nutrient risk assessment. A Call for Experts to participate in the workshop will be carried out through 7 January 2005. Persons interested in responding to the questions raised in the Background Paper, providing information or submitting an application to serve as an Expert for the workshop may visit the web site: http://www.who.int/ipcs/highlights/nutrientraproject/en/.

JECFA and JMPR

The 64th meeting of the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) will be held in Rome, 9-17 February 2005. This meeting will evaluate a series of food contaminants, some of them with known carcinogenic properties. Of particular interest will be the evaluation of acrylamide in food, also on the agenda are ethyl carbamate (urethane) and a group of polybrominated flame retardants.
