Food safety begins with the suppliers of agricultural inputs to farmers and those involved in food production, since materials such as pesticides and veterinary drugs pose different risks and therefore require specific attention. Animal feeding stuffs containing pathogens, including bacteria or toxic chemicals, may also pose specific risks.

Agricultural inputs, such as pesticides, fertilizers and veterinary drugs may lead to unsafe levels of these chemicals in the food supply, for instance in red meat and poultry products, farmed fish and agricultural crops.
