Philippines: Bringing the health response into focus

WHO/F. Guerrero

The 8 November typhoon destroyed hospitals, leveled clinics and washed away drugs, critical equipment and supplies as it swept through more than 25 islands. In all, the storm damaged or destroyed some 2200 medical facilities. Local medical staff at clinics still standing were soon overwhelmed as survivors started pouring in. This injured little girl from Tacloban was among thousands evacuated to a field hospital at the Villamor Air Force Base in Manila during the first week of the emergency.
