Yellow fever is difficult to diagnose. It can be confused with severe malaria, dengue or other haemorrhagic fevers. Blood tests are the most reliable way to diagnose yellow fever. Diagnostics for this outbreak are being done at the national public health laboratory in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, with support from the US Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3) laboratory in Cairo, Egypt, a WHO collaborating centre for infectious diseases.
