2008 in review: key public health issues
December 2008
WHO/Gail Reed
A global financial crisis that may jeopardize health investments, food safety emergencies, and the health effects of conflicts, disasters and climate change made news in 2008.
Emerging new trends in global health also marked the year. Epidemic tobacco use, deadly tuberculosis, the link between social factors and health, unequal access to health care, and a rise in chronic diseases were chronicled.
The key public health issues of 2008 presented in this photo essay point towards areas of focus for Member States and other health partners in 2009.
