Togo: Yellow fever vaccination campaign protects about 1.3 million people

WHO/Olivier Asselin

The Kara and Savanes regions in northern Togo have had no yellow fever for the last 20 years. But late in 2006, the national disease surveillance system picked up three cases. There had been no recent vaccination campaign against the viral haemorrhagic fever, which is transmitted by infected mosquitoes. Worried that the population was highly susceptible to the disease, WHO and the Ministry of Health rapidly sent a team to investigate the situation.
