Workshop discusses implementation of the Convention in the WHO European Region

A regional workshop on implementation of the WHO FCTC brought together 34 Parties to the Convention from the WHO European Region, as well as four State non-Parties and two nongovernmental organizations. The workshop, which was co-organized by the Convention Secretariat and the WHO Regional Office for Europe, was hosted by the Government of the Republic of Moldova in Chisinau on 15-18 November 2011.

The participants exchanged experiences and views on recent developments in the region, possible best practices in implementation of the Convention, and inter-country cooperation. Discussions also included the relevant treaty implementation instruments, such as the guidelines adopted by the Conference of the Parties at its fourth session, and the draft protocol to eliminate illicit trade in tobacco products.

Representatives of development partners from the United Nations Office in Moldova, the World Bank and the European Union also provided their perspectives on relevant development assistance mechanisms, in particular the integration of implementation of the Convention under the United Nations Development Assistance Framework at country level.
