Workshop and training for Pacific island countries

SEPTEMBER 2011 – The Convention Secretariat participated in the workshop on tobacco and alcohol action plans for the Pacific island countries, held in Nadi, Fiji, on 26–29 September 2011, organized by the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific. Participants from the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu exchanged country experiences in the development and implementation of tobacco and alcohol action plans, and considered the essential elements of a national tobacco-control action plan in line with Article 5.1 of the Convention.

During the workshop, the Convention Secretariat provided training to participants on reporting under the WHO FCTC. The training, which followed the structure of the training event held in Bangkok in early September, introduced the new cycle of reporting under the Convention and the reporting instrument, and allowed participants to practise using the instrument.
