A new strain of meningitis expanding in Africa: urgent action needed

1 December 2017 – A new strain of meningococcal meningitis serogroup C emerged in North-West Nigeria in 2013. Between 2013 and 2017, the strain has expanded to Niger and to Northern States of Nigeria causing more than 2500 deaths. Meningitis epidemics could affect 34 million people in the next two years and 10 million doses of vaccines would be needed in addition to the stock available in the international emergency stockpile in order to provide a sufficient response.
