2nd Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on antimicrobial resistance (STAG-AMR) meeting

Scope and purpose of the meeting
The recommendation in September 2013 by the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on antimicrobial resistance (STAG-AMR) for WHO to develop an AMR Global Action Plan (GAP), was endorsed at the January 2014 meeting of the WHO Executive Board, which further recommended in May 2014 that the World Health Assembly adopt a resolution on combatting AMR. The draft resolution has been prepared by Member States in a process being led by Sweden, the UK and the USA. This draft resolution calls upon WHO, as part of its leadership role, to lead the develop a GAP for AMR.
The purpose of the first two days of the meeting was to engage a broad range of stakeholders in a discussion to set out the key elements of a GAP for AMR and also the process of further development of the GAP to maximize stakeholder engagement and commitment. Stakeholder groups invited include: intergovernmental organizations, NGO’s, public health and regulatory agencies, pharmaceutical industry associations, professional societies, networks, civil society and patient groups.
The third day of the meeting was attended by the STAG Members and WHO Secretariat. The purpose was to review the comments on the first two days and prepare their report to the Director-General including the key elements of a GAP for AMR.
