Current status

From 1 January - 30 September 2011, Ethiopia reported 8 new cases as compared to 17 cases reported for the same period in 2010; a 53% reduction. 7 cases, representing 88% of the total, were contained. Cases in 2011 were reported from 5 villages. Indigenous cases were reported in the villages of:

  • Abawiri village (3 cases)
  • Atheti village (2 cases)
  • Utuyu village (1 case)

Two (2) cases from (2) villages in Benchmaji and Southern Nations Nationalities and People's Region were allegedly imported from South Sudan. Out of it, one case was not contained.

237 rumours were reported and investigated.

A total of 489 villages under active surveillance in Ethiopia in 2011.

2010: situation

Ethiopia reported 21 new cases from 10 villages compared with 24 cases from 9 villages reported in 2009.

A total of 19 (90%) cases were reportedly contained. 20 (95% ) cases were reported from Gog woreda, the only endemic district; 1 case imported from Sudan was reported in Nyangatom district in the Southernern Nations and Nationalities and People's Region (SNNPR).

Altogether, 20 (95%) cases in Gog woreda occurred among the Agnuak ethnic group which has spread into Southernern Sudan.

Nine cases reported in 4 villages in Gog district were allegedly imported from other endemic villages within the country.

The country has adopted a nationwide policy of offering a cash reward of Biir 500 (about US$ 37) for reporting cases. In 2010, 316 rumours were reported; 300 of these came from endemic districts and 16 reported from non-endemic ones.
