The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol was adopted on 13 December 2006 and entered into force on May 3, 2008. The Convention follows and supercedes the United Nations Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities, adopted in 1993, which was the catalyst for more than 50 of the world's nations adopting disability rights legislation.
