Mr Joe Ubiedo is a Prosthetist-Orthotist and holds an MPhil from the bioengineering unit of the Strathclyde University in Glasgow, United Kingdom. He is a French citizen born in Spain, fluent in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.
Mr Ubiedo has extensive experience in humanitarian work and rehabilitation globally. Before joining WHO/AFRO, he worked with Medical Care Development International (MCDI) focussing on access to physical and socio-economic rehabilitation services for disabled soldiers in southern Sudan. He also advised on the Omega Initiative Program for Africa implemented by Pact and the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation. Mr Ubiedo has also worked with the International Committee of the Red Cross and occupied different positions as Head of Orthopaedic Projects and as Technical Coordinator of the Special Fund for the Disabled in Africa. He developed the Patient Service Support program in Ethiopia to increase access to physical rehabilitation for disabled persons and to enhance partners’ institutional capacity.
Mr Ubiedo works with Members States in the African region to develop and strengthen their disability and rehabilitation policies and programs.
