Meningococcal disease in Kenya

3 March 2006

From 1 January to 26 February 2006, the Ministry of Health has reported a total of 74 cases and 15 deaths (20% CFR) in 4 divisions (Alale, Chepareria, Kachelila and Kasei) of West Pokot, an area bordering the epidemic districts of Uganda.

Following laboratory confirmation of Neisseria meningitidis W135, the International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision for Epidemic Meningitis Control has provided 200 000 doses of trivalent vaccine, as well as oily chloramphenicol, rapid tests and transport media. The immunization campaign, due to start on 7 March, will be implemented by the Ministry of Health, with the support from Médecins sans Frontières, UNICEF and WHO.
