Meningococcal disease in India - update

Between 29 March and 10 May 2005, a total of 214 cases including 16 deaths (case fatality rate 7.5%) has been reported to WHO (see previous report). The National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) has confirmed N. meningitidis serogroup A in 7 cerebrospinal fluid specimens. Most of the cases have been reported from Old Delhi.
National authorities have established a coordination group comprised of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare in India, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Committee, Hospitals, NICD, WHO and other relevant institutions. Outbreak response activities include surveillance for early case detection, case management, chemoprophylaxis of close contacts and vaccination of the population at high risk.
