Meningococcal disease in Burkina Faso - Update 4

Disease Outbreak Reported

As of 20 April, the Ministry of Health of Burkina Faso has reported a total of 7146 cases including 1058 deaths (case-fatality rate, 14.8%) since the outbreak began in January 2003 (see previous report).

32 of 53 districts in the country have been affected. Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A and W135 have been isolated in those districts which reached the epidemic threshold. One district is still in the alert phase. The Ministry of Health, with the assistance of WHO has carried out a vaccination campaign in which 2 million persons were vaccinated and implemented case management activities.
