Agenda and Working Groups

The Global Consultation on Child and Adolescent Health and Development opened on March 12 with inaugural addresses from the hosts, Queen Silvia of Sweden, and Ingela Thalén, the Swedish Minister of Social Security and Children’s Affairs.

Then, WHO Director-General Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland and UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy made their key note speeches.

Day 1 of the Consultation included addresses by UN agency heads and other global leaders. It also includes a panel/round table of experts on issues relating to poverty and health issues.  Discussions focused on child and adolescent health in the socio-economic context, and the benefits of partners in action.

Day 2 was largely technical, with discussions of interventions across the life course, and working group discussions on the main aspects of scaling up child and adolescent health interventions. Participants devoted themselves to five working groups for more in-depth analysis of some of the most pressing issues around child and adolescent health and development.

Working group topics include:

Group 1: Involving youth, families, and communities

Group 2: Working with partners and other sectors

Group 3: Policies for equitable health outcomes

Group 4: Strengthening health systems

Group 5: Mobilizing resources.

The Consultation closed with the presentation of recommendations for the future.
