Extracts from the WHO Constitution

The WHO constitution governs the activities of the Classifications, Assessment and Terminologies team and the WHO-FIC Network. Article 2 on the functions of the WHO is the key article of the constitution that governs our work. The following clauses are of particular relevance:

(f) to establish and maintain such administrative and technical services as may be required, including epidemiological and statistical services;

(s) to establish and revise as necessary international nomenclatures of diseases, of causes of death and of public health practices;

World Health Assembly Resolutions

The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health was endorsed by the World Health Assembly in May 2001.

The International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision, was endorsed by the World Health Assembly in May 1990

Regulations on nomenclature

The regulations on nomenclature were endorsed by the World Health Assembly in May 1967.

The Protocol for the WHO Family of International Classifications

This document defines a World Health Organization Family of International Classifications (WHO-FIC) and presents a set of principles for including a classification in the family. The background to the Family, a description of the principles that govern the acceptance of a classification as a member of the WHO Family and the process to incorporate a candidate classification in the Family are included.
