Notes for Unsafe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

Improved water supply
Includes one or more of the following: Standpost/pipe, Borehole, Protected spring or well, Collected rain water. Improvement does not ensure that water is safe, but it is more accessible and some measures are taken to protect the water source from contamination

Improved sanitation
Includes one or more of the following: Septic tank, Simple pit latrine, Ventilated Improved Pit-latrine. Isolation of excreta means less chance of contamination of human environments. No treatment or re-use of wastewater in any of these options

Water disinfection at point of use
The intervention consists of point-of-use treatment of contaminated water using sodium hypochlorite solution; safe water storage in plastic containers with a narrow mouth, lid, and a spigot to prevent recontamination; and behavior change techniques, including social marketing, community mobilization, communication, and education

Regulated piped water supply
Includes: Piped water to the house, Treatment to remove pathogens, Quality monitoring, Pollution control

Sewerage coverage
Includes: Treatment of some wastewater
