Health State Valuations
Generalised cost-effectiveness analysis requires health state valuations (formerly referred to as disability weights) to assign weights to years spent in different states of health. This allows years of life lost due to premature mortality to be combined with years spent in health states worse than perfect health. A distinction can be made between health state valuations, the purpose of which is to assign a single value to time spent in different health states, and health status measurement, which seeks to describe the current health of individuals in terms of multiple dimensions. Health state valuations for particular disease conditions included in these analyses are described under 'Calculation of the effectiveness of health interventions' (follow Results, Effectiveness). The table below provides health state valuations (on a scale 0 to 1, where 0 is equivalent to death, and 1 is equivalent to full health) for the general population who are susceptible to a particular disease or risk factor (by age, sex and WHO epidemiological sub-region).
