Special SPSS macros
Tailored macros in SPSS are available for the analysis of two types of surveys conducted in a standard format:
- Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS)
- Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS)
A special macro facilitates analysis of child nutritional data derived from DHS individual data files. In the first rounds of the DHS children's anthropometric measurement data were part of the women's questionnaire and a child's measurements were only taken if his/her mother was present and was interviewed.
Another macro facilitates analysis of child nutritional data derived from DHS household data files. This macro should be used for all recent DHS surveys which include the anthropometry section in the household questionnaire. DHS decided this change so that even if a child's mother is not at home or is no longer alive or taking care of the child, measurements will be taken for this child. The criterion to include a child is whether s/he slept last night in the household.
This change was applied in round IV of the DHS, which started in 1998-1999. Note that there was a little delay in applying the new procedures and thus some of the earliest surveys under this round had not yet made the change.
A separate macro facilitates the analysis of child nutritional data in the MICS surveys.
