Buruli ulcer endemic countries

Endemicity

Buruli ulcer has been reported from 33 countries. However, the geographical distribution of the disease is not fully known for the following reasons:

  • Under-reporting due to insufficient knowledge among both health workers and the public;
  • people most affected live in remote, rural areas and having little contact with the health system;
  • variability in the clinical presentation of the disease is often mistaken for other tropical skin diseases and ulcers; and
  • Buruli ulcer is not a notifiable disease in many countries.

Endemic and neighbouring countries should increase awareness about Buruli ulcer and put up effective surveillance and reporting systems.
