The document of the month

Document of the month: February 2014

A WHO-assisted pilot project trachoma team centred on the Gandhi Eye Hospital in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, is systematically working through the region village by village, examining patients, organizing antibiotic treatment, and carrying out research to determine the ways in which infection is spread.
The work is serious but the young boys of Auriha think it is great fun to take part in experiments carried out by the project team. Flies are known to play an important role in the transmission of trachoma and associated bacterial infections. Here, a team member collects flies that have settled on the face of a child in order to determine the types of flies attracted to eye secretions.
