Forum 2012 - Cape Town, 24-26 April 2012

Under the theme of "Beyond Aid...Research and Innovation as key drivers for Health, Equity and Development", the Council on Health Research for Development (COHRED) and the Global Forum for Health Research will focus on potentials, solutions and developing capacities, specifically in low-and middle-income countries and emerging economies, and how global collaboration can leverage this for a new era of global development support.

Forum 2012 will bring together seven key constituencies which are 1) governments, 2) research institutions, 3) business, 4) social enterprises / CSOs, 5) international organizations, 6) funders and 7) media and more. It will serve as a platform to bring together the world’s top change makers from both North and South to work together hand in hand through equal partnerships to effect change.

Access to Medicines – Priority-setting for a health policy and systems research agenda - Global Stakeholders Meeting, Bangkok, Thailand, 6 to 8 March 2012

A group of academic experts, donors, policy-makers, and NGOs convened in Bangkok to discuss, debate and come to a consensus on translation of policy concerns into research questions.

Results from this meeting will be updated on the Alliance's web site to provide the global public health community with information on the priority policy concerns in Access to Medicines (ATM) through a health policy and systems research framework.
This meeting will be followed by a call for proposals to address the research gaps in the priority areas in the Access to Medicines Project.

The Alliance at ICIUM, Antalya, 14-18 November 2011

ICIUM 2011

Several Alliance funded researchers, members of the Alliance Secretariat and of its Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) attended the Third International Conference on Improving the Use of Medicines (ICIUM 2011). As ICIUM established an agenda for research and action, all participants share the responsibility of working on evidence-based lasting solutions for better access to medicines. Through its Access to Medicines projects, the Alliance is proud to contribute to this global agenda.

World Conference on Social Determinants of Health, 19-21 October 2011

Alliance Technical Officer, Kent Ranson helped the Department of Ethics, Equity, Trade and Human Rights to organize the World Conference on Social Determinants of Health on 19-21 October 2011 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
One of the central themes of the Conference was the role of the health sector, including public health programmes, in reducing health inequities. The conference brought together over 1000 participants representing 125 Member States. The event was attended among others by Michel Temer, Vice President of Brazil and Dr Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General. On 21 October, 2011 participating Member States adopted the Rio Political Declaration on Social Determinants of Health.
Among other things, Member States pledged to:
- Strengthen health systems towards the provision of equitable universal coverage and promote access to high quality, promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative health services throughout the life-cycle, with a particular focus on comprehensive and integrated primary health care;
- Build, strengthen and maintain health financing and risk pooling systems that prevent people from becoming impoverished when they seek medical treatment; and
- Integrate equity, as a priority within health systems, as well as in the design and delivery of health services and public health programmes.

Taghreed Adam, Alliance staff, visited Karolinksa Institutet

Taghreed Adam visited the Karolinksa Institutet to give a lecture on systems thinking for health systems strengthening to master's students in the Health Economics, Policy and Management programme.
