Ageing and life course

INTRA I project description

What is INTRA I

The aim of INTRA I was to examine the health care delivery system's role and response to ageing with a particular focus on Primary Health Care (PHC). Its objective was to build an evidence base that would assist developing countries in guiding future actions and policies towards integrated health care systems and develop a "comprehensive" health care strategy that would further health promotion and prevention interventions at the PHC level.

The process was one that fostered a bottom up approach – bringing together experts from each of the six countries to develop the project proposal, the survey instruments and a standardized methodology. The project also aimed to enhance and promote South-South exchange of information and experiences.

INTRA data were collected from both patients and a wide range of health care providers thus exposing us to diverse perspectives.

Through the implementation of 112 questions in six countries, INTRA:

  • documented current risk factors and disease profiles among patients aged 50+ attending primary health care centers
  • highlighted information on the behavior, knowledge and attitudes of primary health care providers towards health promotion and prevention activities targeting older adults.
