Suicide is the act of deliberately killing oneself. Risk factors for suicide include mental disorder (such as depression, personality disorder, alcohol dependence, or schizophrenia), and some physical illnesses, such as neurological disorders, cancer, and HIV infection. There are effective strategies and interventions for the prevention of suicide.
September 2014: Release of WHO’s first global report on suicide prevention
WHO will be releasing its first comprehensive report on suicide prevention in September. It includes information on:
- what is known about suicide across the world;
- groups at particular risk of suicide;
- what can be done at both societal and individual level to reduce the number of deaths from suicide.
