Current WHO global phase of pandemic alert: Avian Influenza A(H5N1)

The pandemic influenza phases reflect WHO’s risk assessment of the global situation regarding each influenza virus with pandemic potential that is infecting humans. These assessments are made initially when such viruses are identified and are updated based on evolving virological, epidemiological and clinical data. The phases provide a high-level, global view of the evolving picture.

Based on FluNet reporting (as of 4 June 2013, 11:25 UTC), during weeks 20 to 21 (12 May 2013 to 25 May 2013), National Influenza Centres (NICs) and other national influenza laboratories from 87 countries, areas or territories reported data. The WHO GISRS laboratories tested more than 30 922 specimens. 1 894 were positive for influenza viruses, of which 1 208 (63.8%) were typed as influenza A and 686 (36.2%) as influenza B. Of the sub-typed influenza A viruses, 766 (73.9%) were influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and 271 (26.1%) were influenza A(H3N2). Of the characterized B viruses, 14 (63.6%) belong to the B-Yamagata lineage and 8 (36.4%) to the B-Victoria lineage.

Based on FluNet reporting (as of 21 May 2013, 10:30 UTC), during weeks 18 to 19 (28 April 2013 to 11 May 2013), National Influenza Centres (NICs) and other national influenza laboratories from 76 countries, areas or territories reported data. The WHO GISRS laboratories tested more than 22 766 specimens. 1 820 were positive for influenza viruses, of which 1 099 (60.4%) were typed as influenza A and 721 (39.6%) as influenza B. Of the sub-typed influenza A viruses, 699 (78.5%) were influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and 191 (21.4%) were influenza A(H3N2). Of the characterized B viruses, 16 (59.3%) belong to the B-Yamagata lineage and 11 (40.7%) to the B-Victoria lineage.

Based on FluNet reporting (as of 7 May 2013, 10:30 UTC), during weeks 16 to 17 (14 to 27 April 2013), National Influenza Centres (NICs) and other national influenza laboratories from 80 countries, areas or territories reported data. The WHO GISRS laboratories tested more than 41 698 specimens. 4384 were positive for influenza viruses, of which 2400 (54.7%) were typed as influenza A and 1984 (45.3%) as influenza B. Of the sub-typed influenza A viruses, 1224 (67.3%) were influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, 595 (32.7%) were influenza A(H3N2). Of the characterized B viruses, 91 (85%) belonged to the B-Yamagata lineage and 16 (15%) to the B-Victoria lineage.

The WHO GISRS laboratories tested more than 33 329 specimens. 6 194 were positive for influenza viruses, of which 2 856 (46.1%) were typed as influenza A and 3 338 (53.9%) as influenza B. Of the sub-typed influenza A viruses, 829 (45.8%) were influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and 982 (54.2%) were influenza A(H3N2). Of the characterized B viruses, 218 (91.2%) belong to the B-Yamagata lineage and 21 (8.8%) to the B-Victoria lineage.

The WHO GISRS laboratories tested more than 51 751 specimens. 10 548 were positive for influenza viruses, of which 5 531 (52.4%) were typed as influenza A and 5 017 (47.6%) as influenza B. Of the sub-typed influenza A viruses, 2 017 (56.1%) were influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and 1 581 (43.9%) were influenza A(H3N2). Of the characterized B viruses, 292 (88.5%) belong to the B-Yamagata lineage and 38 (11.5%) to the B-Victoria lineage.

The WHO GISRS laboratories tested more than 51 007 specimens. 15 026 were positive for influenza viruses, of which 8361 (55.6%) were typed as influenza A and 6665 (44.4%) as influenza B. Of the sub-typed influenza A viruses, 3061 (57.9%) were influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and 2226 (42.1%) were influenza A(H3N2). Of the characterized B viruses, 533 (90.5%) belong to the B-Yamagata lineage and 56 (9.5%) to the B-Victoria lineage.

The WHO GISRS laboratories tested more than 79 430 specimens. 20 386 were positive for influenza viruses, of which 12 859 (63.1%) were typed as influenza A and 7 527 (36.9%) as influenza B. Of the sub-typed influenza A viruses, 5 355 (62.1%) were influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and 3 264 (37.9%) were influenza A(H3N2). Of the characterized B viruses, 432 (89.8%) belonged to the B-Yamagata lineage and 49 (10.2%) to the B-Victoria lineage.
