India records one year without polio
India was once the global epicentre of polio. But on 12 January 2012, the country was removed from the list of countries with active transmission of wild poliovirus. Polio now persists in fewer places than ever before, with just three endemic countries remaining: Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. India's success is proof that transmission can be stopped in even the most challenging environments.
